Career Ideas for Digital Nomads and Remote Workers #2

Reminder: Becoming a digital nomad or working online as an expat requires being skilled and showing credentials to clients and/or employers. I already wrote about online fitness coaching. This time, I will talk about tourism.

I see many young people, who surely didn’t consider their options for long, trying to set up YouTube vlog channels or travel blogs. This is the hard way to succeed: there are hundreds of YouTube channels, all doing the same thing without adding any value. Another approach is to offer a genuine service, with real skills based on your profile as an expat or traveler. And Tourism offers varied and enriching opportunities. Here are a few examples.

Tour organizers plan, organize, and manage tours for groups or individuals. This requires project management skills, logistical abilities, and great attention to detail. Booking specialists focus on managing reservations for trips, accommodations, and activities. This role demands a good command of online booking systems, customer service skills, and the ability to solve problems quickly. Destination specialists are experts in one or more specific destinations, which is particularly attractive for long-term expats. They provide detailed information and personalized advice to clients based on their preferences and needs. Finally, tourism advisors offer general advice on tourism and help clients plan memorable, stress-free trips. They must have extensive knowledge of tourist destinations, communication skills, and the ability to understand clients’ needs and desires.

I hope the above has shown you that the skills for these jobs are not acquired solely through a sense of competence or divine grace. And I sincerely hope you don’t think there’s no need to learn these jobs.

If you’re interested in the above, the good news is that you don’t need to spend two or three years learning these jobs. Micro-credentials, specific certifications that validate particular skills, are obtained through short online courses. Unlike traditional degrees, these certifications are designed to be quickly obtained and directly applicable to specific jobs. By obtaining a micro-credential in tourism, you can quickly acquire the skills needed to excel in your chosen field. They are often available online, allowing you to study at your own pace and from anywhere in the world. More and more employers recognize the value of micro-credentials as proof of practical skills. Whether you want to work for a company or as a freelancer, micro-credentials establish your credibility and open up more professional opportunities.

Mankesav Consulting is working on this subject in partnership with Online Courses Australia, which offers specialized tourism programs: https://bit.ly/OCA-Tourism.
